Hoping Against Hope: Theology for an Anxious Age

16 – 22 August 2026

The awareness that the world faces significant ecological challenges (including climate change) is now widespread and raises deep concern for many.  At the same time, during the last four decades, the view that care of creation is an integral aspect of normal Christian life and worship – integral to our human vocation – has been rediscovered by large parts of the broader Christian community.

But do the theological motifs we employ to describe this vocation inspire us?  Do the actions we promote as a response nourish our collective hope or leave us feeling overwhelmed and anxious?  Do the spiritual practices advanced to sustain our conservation activities, bring life and flourishing to those involved or contribute further to a sense of exhaustion?

Andrew Shepherd, lecturer at the University of Otago (New Zealand) and former director of A Rocha New Zealand, will be our speaker throughout the week. He will help us reflect on these issues together by sharing his own insights. The mornings will be devoted to Andrew’s teachings, while the afternoons will be more free, with suggested activities on site (nature outings, walks, discovering biodiversity), allowing everyone to recharge their batteries and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings…

Please note: morning classes will be conducted in English with a simultaneous translation in French. Other activities may be conducted in both English and French.

Dr Andrew Shepherd is the Senior Lecturer in Theology and Public Issues within the Theology Programme, University of Otago in Aotearoa New Zealand.  His working life has included involvement in theological education and Christian leadership formation, participation in intercultural and environmental education, practical conservation work, and leadership roles within Christian non-profit organisations – including significant involvement in the establishment and leadership of A Rocha in Aotearoa NZ between 2005-2018.  He researches, teaches, and writes on a range of ethical topics, including ecological theology and climate change, social polarisation, violence and militarism, economics, and digital technologies.

Hoping Against Hope: Theology for an Anxious Age

Many Christians now consider respect for creation to be inseparable from our human and Christian vocation. But how can we encourage this reflection and nourish our actions, while resisting feelings of anxiety or exhaustion? What theology and spiritual practices can inspire our Christian stance in the face of the crises of creation?

A week led by Andrew Shepherd, theologian and former director of A Rocha New Zealand.

Info: A Rocha France is also organising a ‘delocalised’ holiday… in Brittany!

Programme 2024

Creation Care week with Rev. Dr. Dave Bookless

LAST MINUTE SPECIAL OFFER ! 10% OFF THE PRICE OF THE WEEK FOR ALL BOOKINGS

From 4th to 10 August 2024

Living hope for a wounded world

The Bible contains visions of a future era of hope and peace beyond tragedy and judgment. Jesus also taught us to pray for God’s kingdom to come on earth as in heaven. Yet, we live in an era of ecological disaster and fear, with predictions of disastrous climate change, loss of wildlife, plastic pollution and waste. In addition, many are in despair at economic, social and political trends which cause injustice, division and poverty.

  • What is the Bible’s message to today’s context?
  • How does caring for creation relate to the Gospel message?
  • Is the task of the church to prepare people for heaven, or to seek transformation here and now?
  • How can we live with hope, wonder and joy in a world of wounds?

We will explore God’s two books, the Christian scriptures and the beauty of God’s creation in the Domaine de Courmettes, as we reflect on our place in God’s world using our heads, our hearts and our hands.

Teaching will be in English with simultaneous translation in French.

Rev. Dr. Dave Bookless was born in India, and has lived for the past 30 years in multiracial urban London, along with his wife Anne and four daughters. He is a pastor, author and speaker, who serves as Director of Theology for A Rocha International, and is also a Global Catalyst for Creation Care for the Lausanne Movement. He has spoken in more than 30 countries across six continents, and his book Planetwise has been translated into Chinese, Dutch, French, German and Spanish.

The struggles of man, the ego or faith?

From 11th to 17th august 2024

Description

Seminary with Francis Mouhot, psychologist.

Life is a succession of struggles, as the Bible and psychologists say. Our ordinary struggles are both internal and external.

Psychology sees the human ego in constant conflict with three bodies: two internal (its drives, which often push it to excess, and its superego, which restrains it) and with the external world, which frequently restricts its ‘freedom’. Freud was a pessimist: our ego is weak, ‘it is not master of its own house’, he said. This is a major debate among psychologists, not to say an insoluble problem (our ego is both our ally and our greatest source of resistance).

The Bible refers to a number of human struggles and also considers that our enemies are both internal and external. Are these the same battles as those mentioned in psychology?

Internal: do Christians have to fight against their impulses and their conscience? How does Christ promise us victory and inner freedom? What is the struggle of faith?

External: Christians are increasingly confronted with people, organisations and ideologies that oppose or even hate the Christian faith and want to limit our freedom of conscience and expression. Who are we up against? What are our weapons? What causes must we defend? What attitude should we adopt in the face of the dictatorship of relativism, the spread of the culture of death, the intolerance that spreads in the name of tolerance?

Programme

  • early morning Bible study
  • teaching from 10 am to 12.30 pm
  • afternoons free with suggestions for outings in the surrounding area
  • informal evenings
