From 11th to 17th august 2024
Description
Seminary with Francis Mouhot, psychologist.
Life is a succession of struggles, as the Bible and psychologists say. Our ordinary struggles are both internal and external.
Psychology sees the human ego in constant conflict with three bodies: two internal (its drives, which often push it to excess, and its superego, which restrains it) and with the external world, which frequently restricts its ‘freedom’. Freud was a pessimist: our ego is weak, ‘it is not master of its own house’, he said. This is a major debate among psychologists, not to say an insoluble problem (our ego is both our ally and our greatest source of resistance).
The Bible refers to a number of human struggles and also considers that our enemies are both internal and external. Are these the same battles as those mentioned in psychology?
Internal: do Christians have to fight against their impulses and their conscience? How does Christ promise us victory and inner freedom? What is the struggle of faith?
External: Christians are increasingly confronted with people, organisations and ideologies that oppose or even hate the Christian faith and want to limit our freedom of conscience and expression. Who are we up against? What are our weapons? What causes must we defend? What attitude should we adopt in the face of the dictatorship of relativism, the spread of the culture of death, the intolerance that spreads in the name of tolerance?
